What is the difference between electric and hybrid cars?
An electric car doesn’t have a conventional engine that uses petrol or diesel fuel, it has an electric motor that requires electricity to work. As such, they don’t produce the harmful emissions associated with petrol or diesel cars, making them a greener option over their full lifecycle. However, it does mean that the car’s battery will need to be charged in order to use it.
A hybrid car is somewhere in between a standard car and a fully electric car, as it has a conventional engine that uses diesel or petrol but also has a battery. They’re useful when travelling long distances, or if you are going somewhere that doesn’t have an available electric charging point.
Both types of cars are covered by John Lewis Money Car Insurance for replacement of key parts such as your battery, charging cables, and home charging point.

EV and hybrid car insurance FAQs
Do I need specialist insurance for an electric or hybrid car?
No, not necessarily. While some insurers offer specialist EV insurance, often standard car insurance will cover EVs - like ours. Our standard car insurance has features including out of charge recovery and battery cover.
Does John Lewis Money Car Insurance cover damage to an electric battery?
Yes, if it is damaged due to an accident or theft then we will replace it.
Are EV and hybrid cars tax exempt?
Since 1 April 2025, owners of both new and existing hybrid and electric vehicles have had to pay tax. The amount you need to pay depends on the type of vehicle and when it was registered. To find out more, please see the guidance on gov.uk.
If a fire happens when charging my car, should I claim on my car or home insurance?
The growth in electric car ownership means more of us will be charging our cars at home.
People can get confused about whether to claim under their car or home insurance if a fire happens. It all depends on where the fire starts. If electrical wiring caused it, then it’s claimed under home insurance. If an EV fault caused it, then it’s claimed under car insurance.
What does the future hold for electric vehicles?
The government has recently announced that all new conventional petrol and diesel cars will be banned from being sold in 2030. New hybrid cars will still be for sale until 2035. This aims to help ease the transition to Zero Emission Vehicles. Vans of all fuel types (ICE, Hybrid and PHEV) will no longer be for sale after 2035. That means more of us are going to be buying and driving electric cars soon. Car manufacturers are already working on developing a new generation of cars, and we'll be seeing more of them on the road in the coming years.
