Motor legal protection
When an accident isn’t your fault, we’ve got you covered.
No matter how good you are at driving, accidents can always be caused by others on the road. If you’re involved in an accident that isn’t your fault, Motor Legal Protection will help you with the burden of legal costs.
What is motor legal protection?
If you’re involved in a motor accident that isn’t your fault, motor legal protection insurance provides cover to help you pursue compensation for your injuries, and/or to recover any losses that aren’t covered by your car insurance policy from the driver at fault. It also provides cover for legal defence costs if you’re prosecuted for a motoring offence, as well as support for contract disputes relating to your vehicle.
John Lewis Money Car Insurance customers can add Motor Legal Protection to their policy for an additional cost.

What’s covered by Motor Legal Protection?
Our Motor Legal Protection cover is an optional add-on that can help you access professional legal support when you need it. It offers:
Legal expenses
You’ll receive up to £100,000 towards any legal expenses that you incur.
Recovering losses
Help to pursue compensation or recovery of losses such as your policy excess.
Pursuing legal rights
Cover for costs and expenses for pursuing legal rights after an accident which has caused death or bodily injury to the driver or passengers.
Motoring offences
Cover for the costs of defending against prosecution for some motoring offences.
Motor contract disputes
Cover for costs and expenses associated with motor contract disputes, e.g. faulty repairs or services, or issues with buying or selling of the insured vehicle (the dispute amount must be more than £250, including VAT).
Helpline and counselling
Access to a 24/7 legal helpline for legal advice, tax advice, health and medical information, and a counselling service.
Is there anything Motor Legal Protection doesn’t cover?
There’s a full list in the policy document, but as an overview some of the areas that aren’t covered include:
We can't provide cover if you were driving without a licence, disqualified or under the influence of drink or drugs.
Any costs and expenses that have been incurred before we accept the claim or any legal action taken that we haven’t agreed.
Any fines, penalties, compensation or damages that a court has ordered you to pay.
What’s the difference between Motor Legal Protection and legal liability cover?
Unlike Motor Legal Protection, legal liability covers:
Your legal liability for the death or injury of another person
Damage to property caused by you driving your car
Other insured drivers using your car with your permission
John Lewis Money Car Insurance includes legal liability cover as standard.

Do I need Motor Legal Protection?
Before you decide to add Motor Legal Protection to your John Lewis Money Car Insurance, check if you already have cover.
In some cases, you could have cover through:
An existing car insurance policy, including someone else’s policy where you are a named driver
A bank account package
Your trade union
