Guaranteed replacement vehicle
Get back on the road with our Guaranteed Replacement Vehicle cover
If you depend on your car, then a motor accident or theft of your vehicle could really disrupt your life. Guaranteed Replacement Vehicle cover will help you get back on the road quickly if your car can’t be driven due to an accident or theft.
What is Guaranteed Replacement Vehicle cover?
Guaranteed Replacement Vehicle cover ensures you get a temporary vehicle if yours is written off and can’t be driven after an accident, or is stolen and not recovered. Unlike standard courtesy cars, which depend on garage availability, this optional add-on guarantees a comparable vehicle for a maximum period of 21 days.
John Lewis Money Car Insurance customers who have selected the Essentials tier of cover can add this to their policy for an additional cost. This extension comes included as standard with Premier cover.

What’s included with Guaranteed Replacement Vehicle cover?
Cover is for incidents occurring within England, Wales, the mainland of Scotland, and Northern Ireland. For full terms, conditions and specific policy exclusions, please refer to the policy document.
A replacement vehicle
If your insured vehicle is stolen or rendered undriveable following an accident which is your fault, that results in it being declared a write-off, you’ll be given a replacement vehicle.
Similar specification
Where possible, the replacement will be of a similar type and specification to your insured vehicle (including engine size, seating capacity and transmission).
Money towards alternative transport
If a replacement vehicle can’t be provided, you’ll receive £40 per day towards alternative transportation costs (up to £840 per claim).
Stolen vehicle replacement after 24 hours
If your vehicle is stolen, cover starts 24 hours after the theft is reported to the police.
A car for up to 21 days
Benefits last until the vehicle is recovered and repaired (in theft cases) or for a maximum of 21 days - whichever occurs first.
Cover for other drivers
Anyone legally able to drive your insured vehicle with your consent, such as your named drivers, are also able to drive your replacement vehicle while the 21-day cover is in place.
Is there anything Guaranteed Replacement Vehicle doesn’t cover?
There’s a full list in the policy document, but as an overview some of the areas that aren’t covered include:
Where the damage to your insured vehicle took place prior to your policy starting
Incidents reported more than 14 days after they occurred
We can’t provide cover if you were driving without a valid licence, were disqualified or under the influence of drink or drugs
Where your insured vehicle was not in a roadworthy condition prior to the incident or if you don’t have valid road tax or MOT
The cost of fuel, fluids, or electric vehicle charging
Any additional costs if you choose an alternative or specific vehicle that is more expensive than the standard daily hire rate provided
What is the difference between a Guaranteed Replacement Vehicle and a courtesy car?
A standard courtesy car provides you with a temporary vehicle while yours is being repaired at an approved garage through your car insurance policy. In contrast, Guaranteed Replacement Vehicle cover goes a step further, providing a guaranteed vehicle if your car is written off or stolen and not recovered.
John Lewis Money Car Insurance includes a standard courtesy car with Premier and Essentials policies, providing a small car (such as a Vauxhall Corsa) with a manual gearbox, whilst your car is being repaired by our approved repairers.
