What is contents insurance and how does it work?

Contents insurance covers the things you own inside your home - from furniture and electronics to clothing and personal items. It helps you repair or replace your items, so an unexpected event doesn’t turn into a financial burden.

It can cover many household items

Your sofa, TV or laptop damaged by a leak or flood. Clothes, jewellery or gadgets stolen during a break-in. Furniture or belongings destroyed by a fire. Accidental damage, like spilling paint on a carpet (if included in your policy).

You can tailor your contents policy

Customise your policy with optional extensions for extra protection where you need it.

Contents insurance FAQs

Do I need a buildings insurance policy too?

This depends on your property. If you’re a leaseholder then the freeholder will usually take out a buildings insurance policy, which you’ll need to pay them for separately. If there isn’t a lease on your property then there’s no legal requirement to have buildings insurance in place, but some mortgage providers will require you to have it. To find out more, please see our buildings insurance.

Does contents insurance cover theft?

Theft from your home may be covered so long as all of the necessary precautions stipulated in your policy wording have been followed, such as locking doors and not leaving your property unoccupied for extended periods of time. However, items of high value will need to be listed on your policy if you want their full value to be covered.

Are garden and garage contents covered?

Contents insurance usually covers items within the boundary of your home, including garden furniture and items kept in outbuildings and garages. Please check your policy wording for more information.

Are mobile phones and other gadgets covered?

If they are inside your home then they may be covered under your contents insurance policy. However, if you want them to be covered outside the home then you will need to have Personal possessions cover, which can be added as an optional extension to your John Lewis Money Home Insurance policy.

Do I need to specify high value items?

On a John Lewis Money Home Insurance policy anything above £3,000 in value will need to be specified on your policy. If you have a lot of high value items you may want to consider a specialist home insurance policy.

Does contents insurance include bicycles?

It depends on the bike you want to insure. If you have a John Lewis Money Home Insurance policy you can add an optional extension that will cover each bike up to £5,000 and up to a total of £15,000, in the UK and abroad. A regular pedal bike that doesn’t have a high value will normally be covered by your standard home insurance policy while it is kept at home, or away from the home if you have added Personal possessions cover to your policy. Exclusions apply, please see the policy wording for more details.

Do I need proof of ownership of my contents?

It’s important to make an accurate inventory of your home’s contents and their value in case you need to make a claim. As much as you can, keep all receipts, proof of purchase and valuation documents and take photographs of any particularly valuable items.
