Do I need travel money on a cruise? 

Most cruise ships operate on a fully cashless system on board and some holiday packages include all-inclusive food and drink so this minimises extra expenses on the ship. However, when you start exploring on land, local currency could be handy. 

In smaller ports and local markets, you might find that they don’t accept cards and it could be difficult to find a cash machine when you need it. Cash is also useful if you would like to tip or use local transport. 

Managing your travel money in advance

Ordering travel money in advance gives you time to compare exchange rates and choose an option that suits you. Keep in mind that onboard exchange desks or ATMs may charge extra transaction or withdrawal fees.

If your cruise calls at multiple destinations, checking which local currencies you might need before you set sail can help to ensure you aren’t caught off guard. A helpful tip is to keep different currencies organised in clearly labelled envelopes for each port.
